Brief description of the laboratory achievements in 2013-2017

The goal of the project implemented in 2013-2017 under the state contract 14.B25.31.0017 of 28 June 2013 was the development of the Laboratory for Mechanics of Advanced Bulk Nanomaterials for Innovative Engineering Applications at Saint Petersburg State University, whose results of scientific research and innovation activity will be the development of fundamental mechanics of nanomaterials, development of scientific principles for obtaining new bulk nanomaterials (BNM) with ultra-high mechanical properties, as well as their innovative application in structural, electrical and medical engineering. The Laboratory was founded under the leadership of professor R.Z. Valiev.

The following main scientific results were obtained during 2013-2016 years:

(a) Theoretical models that effectively describe processes and micromechanisms (including new micromechanisms) of plastic deformation and fracture of BNM were developed as a part of development of fundamental mechanics of nanomaterials.

(b) The samples of BNM were obtained from different metal alloys by methods of severe plastic deformation (SPD). Their nanostructural features were studied experimentally and their mechanical properties and micromechanisms of plastic deformation were also comprehensively investigated.

(c) The principles of structural design of BNM for achievement of their high strength (superstrength) were developed. The concepts of nanomaterials utilization for new structural applications were developed and comprehensive experimental studies of the unique mechanical and physical properties of samples and products fabricated using the developed approaches and concepts were carried out.

(d) Complex tests of mechanical and functional properties of nanostructured titanium and its alloys were conducted, on the basis of which the approaches of their application as materials for medical implants of a new generation were developed.

The following scientific indicators were achieved:

- The scientific staff of the laboratory, consisting of highly qualified specialists (Doctors of Sciences and Doctors of Philosophy), as well as young researchers, students and postgraduate students was created (see sections 1-3, 8 of indicator list and Staff).

Laboratory staff

- More than 100 articles indexed in WoS system were published. 4 monographs of top-rated international publishers Wiley and Springer and 5 study guides were published (see sections 4, 13-14 of indicator list and Publications).

Publications over 5 years

- 5 new educational courses in SPbU and USATU were prepared and introduced. 4 training courses for young scientists and lecturers from external organizations, with participation of more than 80 people were organized and successfully conducted (see sections 5, 9 of indicator list). 9 international seminars and conferences were carried out (see section 15 of indicator list and Events).

Monographs and study guides

- 4 Dr.Sci. and 6 Ph.D. theses were defended as the result of work (see sections 6-7 of indicator list and Dissertations).

Dissertations

- 5 commercial agreements with a third party were concluded and fulfilled (see section 12 of indicator list).

- The unique equipment at a cost of more than 20 mln. rub. was purchased, constructed and put into service (see section Equipment).

- 19 grants of various funds/organizations of the Russian Federation were won by the laboratory staff (see section 11 of indicator list), 6 patents (RU 2399601, RU 2542073, RU 2547984, RU 2586188, RU 2613618, RU 2616316) were obtained and 6 applications for inventions were filed (see section 10 of indicator list).

Patents

- The prestigious international awards for achievements in scientific work (TMS Fellow Award 2014, SOMIYA Award 2015, State award of the Republic of Bashkortostan in the field of science and technology 2015) were won by the top scientist.

- Citation of scientific publications of the leading scientist and the laboratory staff in 2013-2016 exceeded 20 000, that is one of the highest rates for the Russian scientists.

Obtained results and conclusions formulated on their basis are novel and superior to the world standard in this field of science. They are of great significance for fundamental sciences of advanced bulk nanomaterials, as well as for development of production and forming technologies and for innovative engineering applications of bulk nanomaterials with the unique mechanical properties (particularly with high and ultra-high strength).
